METROPOLE HOTEL

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Located in the heart of downtown Cape Town, the Metropole Hotel is a stunning amalgam of old and new, stateliness and dynamism. Housed in a refurbished Georgian structure, the Metropole retains the maturity and grace of the original building, while simulatenously evoking a youthful energy through its modern interior design.

The 25 luxurious bedrooms are studies in comfotable elegance, featuring travertine marble bathrooms, wide corridors and European-style beds bedecked with soft French linens. For guest convenience, all rooms are equipped with universal electrical outlets, Internet modem portholes for laptops, satellite television and invidual remote-controlled air conditioning.

The Metropole Hotel's ground floor M Café offers quick and light dishes every day of the week – perfect for a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner. Those in search of a nightspot need look no further than the Metropole’s M-Bar & Lounge located on the first floor. Poppy-red decor and ostrich-leather chairs create an electric atmosphere embellished by red lighting and warm music. There, intimate relaxation corners co-exist with loud sofas covered in Versace fabric, all guarded by comical figurines of bent wire perched along throughout the lounge.

Past and present are superimposed at several levels at this newly restored Georgian Townhouse on Cape Town’s vibrant Long Street, redone to designer François du Plessis’s specifications.

The house, constructed in 1870, acquired a Georgian facade in 1905. Over the years it has had terrorising rounds of renovations, excesses now worked into a funky concoction of modern, retro and classic elements. But "Afro-Glam" rules inside. Red is the dominant colour in public spaces of Metropole Hotel, with all the passion and decadence it implies.

Another eye-catcher in the lobby is one of South Africa’s oldest working elevators, which is also a reminder of the building’s long history. Despite the Veranda restaurant, with its uninterrupted view of Long Street, emphasising clean lines, colour contrast is still the rule, and the M-Bar & Lounge goes all out with a poppy-hued lounge area and plush furnishings in a decadent space.

The 25 guestrooms of the Metropole Hotel provide a contrast of quiet, textured luxury brought up to modern speed by du Plessis’s interior concept, which does away with heavy carpets and ageing wallpaper to come up with a soothing minimalism. Nonetheless, the original generous floor plan abides, with its large rooms and wide corridors providing an old-fashioned luxury of space – one which has been infused with contemporary elegance, an edgy choice of finishes and flavoured with a vibrant style that is indigenous to the land.
